Book Binding Options
When it comes to binding options for books, there are a few different options to choose from depending on your project.
Perfect Binding
When most people think ‘book,’ perfect binding is what comes to mind. Perfect for novels and lots of pages, the perfect binding process includes adhering text pages to a wrap-around cover with glue. There are some important considerations when designing for perfect binding - see How to Setup InDesign for Perfectly Bound Books to learn more.
Saddle Stitched
A common application for booklets and brochures, saddle stitched binding is just a fancy way to refer to staples along the spine of the book. This works well for budget projects and small page counts.
Coil Bound
Similar to wire-o binding, coil binding refers to punching and inserting a plastic coil to bind the pages together. Unlike wire-o, coil binding uses a heavier duty plastic coil and works great for larger page counts or instances where the item will have a lot of use. When designing for either, you want to make sure to leave room on the spine edge for the coil itself.
Wire-O Bound
Similar to coil binding, wire-o binding refers to punching and inserting metal rings to bind the pages together. Unlike coil, wire-o binding uses a light-weight metal to bind the pages together. This works well for projects with lower page counts and is commonly used for notebooks. When designing for either, you want to make sure to leave room on the spine edge for the coil itself.
